Two quick, read-only ways to confirm your data is being protected — what you’ve selected, and what’s actually stored and ready to recover.
Your Asigra DS-Client backs up the data you select, but it’s always worth confirming exactly what’s being captured. There are two complementary ways to check, and each answers a slightly different question.
Method 1 Backup Items Report Shows what you have selected for backup — your configuration. | Method 2 Restore Wizard Shows what has actually been backed up and is available to recover right now. |
Using both gives you the complete picture: what you intended to protect, and what is genuinely protected and recoverable today.
| Good to knowEvery step below is read-only. You can review all of this without changing a single backup setting or starting an actual restore. |
1. Generate a Backup Items Report
Use this to confirm what you’ve selected for backup. The Backup Items Report lists the sources — drives, folders, databases, mailboxes, and so on — that you have configured DS-Client to protect across your backup sets.
1 | Open the DS-User console and connect to your DS-Client. |
2 | From the menu bar, open the Reports menu (in some versions this is grouped under a Logs & Reports area). |
3 | Select Backup Items Report. |
4 | Choose the backup set(s) you want to include, along with any available filters, then generate the report. |
5 | Review the list of selected items. You can print or export the report if you’d like a record for your files. |
| What it tells youThis is your configuration view — the answer to “What did I tell DS-Client to protect?” It reflects your selections, not necessarily what has successfully completed a backup. |
2. Use the Restore Wizard
Use this to confirm what has actually been backed up. The Restore Wizard browses the data currently held in online storage on the DS-System. Anything you can see here has genuinely been backed up and is available to recover — making this the most reliable way to verify real coverage.
1 | Open the DS-User console and connect to your DS-Client. |
2 | In the Backup Sets list, select the backup set you want to inspect. |
3 | Launch a restore to open the Restore Wizard (from the Sets menu, or by right-clicking the backup set and choosing Restore). |
4 | Browse the backed-up data tree. The files, folders, and items shown are what is actually stored and recoverable. |
5 | Use the date / “as of” selector to view coverage at a point in time, and to see multiple generations (versions) of a file where they exist. |
6 | When you’ve confirmed what you need, simply close or cancel the wizard. |
| ImportantYou do not have to complete a restore to use this check. Browse to verify your coverage, then close the wizard without restoring anything. |
3. Which Method Should I Use?
They work best together. In short: the report shows your intent, and the wizard shows the reality.
| Backup Items Report | Restore Wizard | |
|---|---|---|
| What it shows | What you’ve selected / configured for backup | What’s actually stored and recoverable |
| Question it answers | “What did I tell DS-Client to protect?” | “What can I actually get back right now?” |
| Reflects exclusions, skipped files & retention | No | Yes |
| Point-in-time & file versions (generations) | No | Yes |
| Best for | Auditing your backup scope and settings | Verifying genuine coverage before you rely on it |
4. Good to Know
Selected but not showing in the Restore Wizard? If an item appears in your Backup Items Report but you can’t find it in the Restore Wizard, it may:
- not have completed a successful backup yet (for example, a very recent selection or a job that hasn’t run),
- have been skipped or excluded by a filter, open-file condition, or permissions issue, or
- have aged out under your retention or generation settings.
Any of these is worth a closer look — and a good reason to check both views periodically rather than relying on the configuration alone.
