Choosing the correct retention time
Note Retention times are not additive. The retention you set for the largest increment determines the outer time limit of your retention.
For example, if your retentions were set as below to a retention of 1 year:
Continuous Backups: 96
Six Hour: 7 Days
Daily: 31 Days
Monthly: 24 Months
Quarterly: 4 Quarters
You will have an overall retention of 1 year, because the quarterly retention is the largest increment set, even though the monthly retention specifies a longer time.
If your retentions were set as below to a retention of 60 days:
Continuous Backups: 96
Six Hour: 7 Days
Daily: 90 Days
Monthly: 2 Months
Your retention time would be two months, because the monthly retention is the largest increment set, even though the Daily retention specifies a longer time.
Retention Count
Retention count refers to the number of end-of-period backups that should be retained for each period.
